Food testingWhen food becomes out date bacteria starts to build up. And can get to the point where too much bad bacteria is on our food that it’s no longer safe to eat.
Food poisoning occurs when you eat food that has dangerous amounts of bacteria on it that are able to grow easily on expired foods. Reports have said that eating moldy foods can cause allergies or respiratory distress while others cause illness. It’s better not to eat moldy foods and is not safe to cut the mold off and eat the rest of it. When testing if food is contaminated, scientists say that in fruit they test for pesticides. It’s the opposite in meats, where it’s tested for antibiotics and bacteria. There are two types of testing used: targeted and non-targeted screening. Targeted screening is useful if you know what you are looking for in the food. The use of non-targeted screening is when you don’t know what you are looking for. There are some food testing kits already. They are strips of paper that change colour depending on how much bacteria is on the food. By using these devices and knowing about bacteria, we can then know real expiration date of food which allows us to smartly manage our food. Possibly in future food companies will be able to test our food more accurately so we can get the most out of products. |
