Way to Reduce Waste at Home.
Only buy items when you are planning to use them. By only buying items that you plan to use you will save a lot of money and less food will be wasted. Write a shopping list so you only buy what you actually need. If you write a shopping list you can just add things to the list as you run out during the week. Then when you go to the shops you will end up saving money and reducing food wastage in your house because you will only have the ingredients you actually need. Shop smart i.e. don’t buy more than you or your family needs. If you live alone then you don’t need to buy as much food as a family of four needs. Ask yourself how hungry you are and what you want. Save leftovers. Saving leftovers can save lots of food. You can reheat these and have them the next day or give them to friends or family as they should be pleased with an easy meal at no cost. Cook enough as you need, not more. You only need to cook enough food as you need. Try not to overfill your plate as you can go back for seconds and then make it leftovers. You could even try a compost heap. Compost heaps break down food and plant material and you can use them on gardens, vegetable patches or sell it. Many farmers or charities happily take out of date food. The farmers can use left over food scraps to feed their livestock. When eating out, don’t buy more than you can eat. share the massive meals that restaurants serve with a friend or if not some restaurants let you take home the rest of your meal. Make sure you have used up perishables before buying more. By using up perishables before buying more you will be reducing food wastage because you won’t have more of one thing not going to use, which can then lead to food wastage. When unpacking groceries move older groceries to the front. By moving older groceries to the front when unpacking you will be reducing food wastage because you will be bound to use the older ones up first because there at the front. Monitor each week what you throw away so that you can come up with ways you can stop food wastage in your house. By monitoring each week what you throw away it can show you what you need to do to decrease the amount of food wastage in your house. Plan meals around groceries that are about to expire so that they can be used up before expiration. By planning meals around groceries that are about to expire you will be decreasing the amount of food wastage in your house because you will use more things before they expire. Check your freezer for older meals to have instead of making new ones. By checking your freezer for older meals before making new ones you will be saving a lot of time and by doing this you won’t be wasting as much food. Donate cans of food to charities before they expire so that other people in need can use it. By donating things that you don’t want/need to a charity you won’t be wasting as much and you will be supplying some food to people that can’t afford what you have. As you can see there are many different ways to decrease food wastage in your house. By using some of these methods you will save a lot of money and find out how much food is actually being wasted in your home. By realising what you do at home with your food and taking control of your waste, you can dramatically reduce the amount of food waste you’re producing. These are critical practices that reduce the amount of food being wasted around the world. Because throughout the world too many people don’t have food security and we take for granted the food we have and we all need to think about the food in our lives and learn how to smartly manage it. |

OzHarvest is a food rescue organisation in australia. They collect excess food from commercial outlets and deliver it to more than 800 charities. They are trying to raise awareness about food wastage, food rescue, food security and sustainability. OzHarvest gives the community a change to help reduce food wastage.
